ahead on "starting point." we'll be talking live with john mccain of arizona and rand paul of kentucky. from team obama, we'll be speaking with martin o'malley and campaign spokeswoman, jen psaki. plus, obama's former economic adviser, austan goolsbee. first, though, a look at the instant reaction from the debate in the cnn/orc poll, of debate watchers taken right after the debate, 67% say they think romney won. 25% only thought the president won. cnn's dana bash joins us this morning to go over some of the hits and some of the misses. good morning. >> good morning. well, i'm here in new york, so maybe we should talk about what happens, how you get to carnegie hall, practice, practice, practice. and is that clearly is what helped the mitt romney. he spent a lot of time practicing, really for the past month doing these mock debates. and when it comes to the president, he was rusty. right out of the gate, it was clear. mitt romney came to play. >> the president has a view very similar to the view he had when he ran four years ago. that a bigger government, spending more, taxing more, reg
was winning among independent voters by 13 points. in 2008, he defeated john mccain by 8% of independents. let's see where polls settle. i will be looking at the independent numbers. the other thing about barack obama's election, he won 43% of the white vote. in most of the national polls, that is where he is. look, the country is changing. in 2008, three-quarters of the electorate was white, down from the mid to high-80's. that number is going to change. in a close election -- i do not think anybody thought it would be a seven-point race. the metrics are there for him to win. >> to me, the most stunning numbers from 2008 -- if you take out 18-29-year-old and look just at 30 plus, mccain and obama tied. that shows you how important the youth vote is to the president. that is why you see air force one showing up near -- at airports near major universities. they recognize that fact. john mccain beat barack obama 55-43 among white voters. george w. bush, in 2000, beat al gore among white voters 55- 43. the margin was the same. how did gore and bush is essentially tied? you might not know this, bu
biden. you are probably most likely to think of this. >> john mccain and i are a couple of mavericks and gosh darn it we are going to take that maverick energy right to washin crisis. >> reporter: the real al gore was so stiff in his first debate -- >> i will put medicare and ter:stafecurity in a lock box. >> one he ko te box woue kee >> reporter: the real john mccain wandered around the stage when he debated obama. and so did "snl's" mccain. the parodies aren't just funny they can matter. >> as many people will talk about the "snl" skit on monday as well talk about the actual presidential debate. that's what makes it so powerful. >> reporter: afterall how can the real debate compete with something like this. >> i know the white house. i know the door out to the rose garden doesn't lock unless you pull it. i know that, i know that the toilet in the lincoln bedroom will run all night unless you news, washington. >> you got to jiggle it. >> oh. the strategiry. >> oh, that was will farrell doing bush. dana carvey doing the first push. tina fey, went through the roof after sarah palin. s
the president goes to wisconsin. someone argued this is the bluest of blue. he was the clear winner over john mccain by 14 points four years ago. with paul ryan in the place perhaps that tells us about the polling internally that democrats are seeing in wisconsin. as for governor romney he wakes up in colorado as well and meets up with his running nature paul ryan in the state of virginia, which went for a democrat for the first time since 1964 four years ago, and where will ryan and romney be today? this is agusta county, it bumps pretty close-up to the west virginia border. red is republican, blue is democrat. this part of the state arguably is coal company, which is one of the comments that governor romney made last night. as we watch the map develop and we see the strategies unfold that's where the two men are going today. martha, back to you. martha: very interesting. what does bill o'reilly think about governor romney's performance last night? he will join us here in "america's newsroom" with his first take, his first reaction to the big night last night. bill: looking forward to that,
community provided to me. a group of republicans led by senator john mccain responded quickly saying either the obama administration is misleading congress and the american people or it is blaming the entire failure on the intelligence community. we go to a fox news alert for you right now. a hook-handed, one-eyed terrorist suspect is on a plane head to the united states to face charges. sounds like a cartoon. abu al masri headed to the united kingdom. they wanted to open a training camp in the hills of oregon. he lost both his hand and an eye back in the early 1990 while waging jihad in afghanistan. if al masri is convicted he he probably will not face the death penalty. that was part of the deal with england when they helped extradite him. in just a few hours, the navy's newest warship will be commissioned here in new york city. the u.s.s. michael murphy is named for long island native. murphy was killed during ambush in 2006. dispit despite being shot he left a safe spot and ran into the line of fire in order to call for help. it has a crew of about 300 and will be stationed in hawaii. a
. but douglashall john mccain's former policy adviser says the same thing in a story this morning. elaine child the former george w. bush's labor secretary said the same thing. so serious republicans who understand that these are two totally different surveys, they sort of understand the process and the way bls works there's not really a conspiracy here. >> can i ask you? you've been around d.c. for a long time. has anyone ever questioned this number, any reason to be suspicious of the integrity of it? >> i don't think so. you heard what jared said earlier. you heard what all the other folks say. i love that little line that jared had that they don't let the jan tors take out the garbage until after the numbers are released. it's funny. remember last month when the rather weak unemployment numbers came out, president obama knew them, knew what the numbers would be when he was giving a speech at the democratic convention because the president gets to know the day before when his council of economic advisers chairman takes a piece of paper over and tells him. he knew those numbers when he was giv
, john mccain and lindsay graham sent a letter to 15 major defense contractors, warning, quote, it is our fear should you rely on that guidance and fail to comply with the warren act requirements you will set your company up for serious legal and financial repercussions, and graham sounds outraged. >> this is an example of where the president of the united states is telling a private sector organization, don't comply with the existing statute, and, if you get sued, we'll pay your costs. that should disturb every american, not just republicans and democrats. and, it sets a bad precedent. >> reporter: senior administration officials insist their guidance is legal and consistent with all federal contracting laws, and, regulation. gregg? >> gregg: mike emanuel live in washington, mike, thank you. >> heather: a "fox news alert," now, a rare meningitis outbreak is spreading. the centers for disease control saying 7 people have died, the rare form of fungal meningitis is linked to steroid injections commonly used to treat back pain and the tainted steroids were tracked to a pharmacy in massachus
of education, bill bennett. he also served to john mccain. all of these t-bill regularly on fox news sunday in the fox news channel. i actually met ellen 1981 when he was a very young assistant professor at the university of pennsylvania. it's been great to see all the things he's accomplished since that time. so the question i would like to pose for each of you, and i'll start with governor huntsman. what does the 2012 election reveal about the respective leadership styles of obama and romney? >> probably not much. >> okay, what this panel -- >> see you later. >> you can extrapolate a few things from president obama's first term that might be instructive. he isn't a manager. he doesn't have a history of managing things, so you bring in a bout of good, well-trained, smart people, given their tasks and he tried to lead a government. in the case of governor romney, who has been a governor, who is a business guy, he has run the olympics. i think his attitude would be efficiency. i'm going to come in and looking a government like a business, which sometimes is not the right answer because gover
't look mean. >> dave: as a former debate coach of john mccain, i believe. debates are substance style is style over substance. game changes. do they come down to mannerisms, how you say thing or personality? >> a combination. i think that any challenger just benefits from being on the same stage. to the agree you think he is the president and the other guy isn't. when you see the two of them on the stage, it automatically lifts the challenger to make it look he hat the same stature as the president. first of all if you plan too much with one liners, they are ready to do it. they know what each side is going to do. obviously you can see it. you have been talking earlier today about the obama people trotting out some of those bain employees that were laid off. their basic argument is going to be that he rich guy who is going to take us back to the policies of george w. bush. he was more interested in protecting the wealthy. romney's challenge to say why his policies which include tax cuts why they would help the middle-class. he has to show that his plan will actually help the middle-cl
ago and this time. john mccain was very passive. let the president, candidate obama do whatever he wants to do. mitt romney will not do that, and here's the strength tonight. >> here's the challenge. on the one hand mitt romney has to connect, needs a second look. has had a rough couple of weeks. everyone acknowledged that. needs to be specific about what a romney presidency would achieve. >> we're not talking about accomplishing a lot. two or three things in an hour and a half to accomplish. one of them is to show he's in command, understands the job of the presidency and put barack obama on the defensive given his horrific record on the economy and on national security, and i think he will do that. i think he will be tough with the president. i don't think the president will react particularly well to that because i don't think the president gets people who are very tough with him very often, and i think that interplay i think will be the key moment of the night. >> you see more people optimistic about the economy. you see the president's poll numbers improving with regard to han
